Ankle sprain treatment in Statenkwartier

An acute ankle sprain requires immediate attention because of the pain and swelling. The best advise is to contact a sports physiotherapist at our practice in the Statenkwartier as soon as possible for successful treatment or prevention advises. Ankle injuries are among the most common injuries. Most ankle injuries involve a sprain resulting in ligament injuries.

What is an ankle sprain

A sprain (ankle distortion) is an injury in which the ligaments around the ankle are involved. Most common is the inversion trauma where the ligaments on the outside of the ankle are sprained. When this trauma happens you might have experienced a clicking or snapping sound. This is followed by pain and often swelling on the outside of the ankle. Sometimes you can no longer put weight on the ankle and blue discolouration can occur on the outside of the ankle (within a few days). Milder grades of ankle sprain might involve just swelling, pain with weight bearing and instability.

How do we treat an ankle sprain?

In the first 1-4 days after the sprain you should apply the RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation the affected ankle. After this phase, the ligaments start to recover and with minor to moderate ankle sprain you can resume (sports) activities after 2 to 6 weeks. A severe ankle sprain will involve a longer rehabilitation period and requires physiotherapy. It is a fact that people who had a previous ankle sprain are more prone to suffer another sprain. We can design an exercise program for prevention, help you with advise about a safe activity and sports level, wether or not using tape, brace, Exo-L.

Exo-L brace provides perfect ankle protection against a new sprain
